stuff and things

I've decided to start running again.

Although technically I don't have shoes to run in, but they should be here early this week.

I need to pick a race of some sorts that is sufficiently distant that I can actually get in shape by then, yet sufficiently close that I won't flake out prior to the race and I can use it (and others, hopefully) to keep me focused.

It will be interesting to see how out of shape I am. The last time I was running regularly was in Bermuda around roughly 2005 I think.

I was playing PLO on Poker Stars when their servers went tits up sometime earlier today. It was enlightening that the universal tiltmaker for *everyone* at a table is when the server starts to shit itself and tables freeze up. Nobody lost hands or anything (at least not at my tables), yet people were FREAKING the fuck out.
It was absolutely beautiful.

Sadly it was right at the end of a really nice run of tilting I had made some Finnish dude go into, and I never got to capitalize on it fully - I can only hope the guy has a good memory and comes after me in the near future.
The main amusing points were that I went back to what is now becoming a new standby, and when he was explaining to me what a great laydown he made, I told him it all sounded great but was pretty sure I wasn't in the hand. After 5 straight hands and 5 straights wins against him, and each time me claiming that I wasn't in the hand, he stacked off into another guy at the table. I asked him if he wanted a muffin and this angered him. I won another hand against him and in our discussion, mentioned that I couldn't have been in the hand because I was too busy eating muffins.
I asked him if they have ponies in Finland, because I love ponies and wish I had one. Then, I noted that Norway *does* have ponies, and Norway is superior to Finland, so I could only assume that Finland lacks ponies, and therefore is not worth my attention. He told me I was too fat to visit there.
I agreed and told him I was too fat to even get out of bed and that one day soon they will crane me out and I only hoped to see daylight.

Then the servers went out pretty bad and everyone fled to Full Tilt.

I didn't have any other poker accounts out there, so I made one at Full Tilt ("omgbacon").

Full Tilt was just starting up when I stopped playing poker, so it is all new to me. I preferred Poker Stars over all of the other sites in the past, so trying a new site now is interesting.

Pros
* the low limit ($0.25 and $0.50) PLO players are *awful* - far worse than PS (didn't think it was possible)
* the speed - can get in way more games per hour - the time in dealing cards is one factor
* the "pot" button - I can play one handed and with minimal movement
* the auto-rebuy and top-off features for the stack

Cons
* the limited icons for players makes it harder for me to remember people the way I can on PS (I could use exterior software, but usually don't need to and can remember everything about people I see a lot - that combined with notes, mostly about what makes them tilt)
* the cards are hard to read if I 4 table on my low res laptop - not a problem on PS
* the interface is HORRIBLE for multi-tabling - at least at the low res

If I am playing a single table, I might even prefer FTP - but for multi-tabling, it is pretty painful to play on my laptop.

That said, I have a 100% bonus to clear, and 27% rakeback setup on it. I won't be able to hit Supernova this year on Stars unless I make a jump higher in limits than my bankroll will allow. So while I just hit Gold and maybe Plat every month there, afterwards I will spend time on FTP I guess.

I ran competitively in high school and college (arguably got into the college largely due to it), and then after graduating college just lifted weights and tried to get "Real Big". I got up to 220, and my wife (then gf) decided she didn't like it, so I dropped it all and lead a life largely of sloth that I lead today.

I don't expect to get into speedy shape, but mostly just want to be healthier.

Plus I am a total sucker for gadgets, so this allows me to get a new iPod shuffle (my old one is busted, as is my wife's), and I am looking at the Garmin Forerunner 405 - but trying to track down where/when I can get one.

I had written a website back in the day to track fitness logs on, but the Garmin site seems to have superior stuff in there that requires no effort at all (just wear the 405 and it wirelessly uploads it all to the computer, which uploads it to their site, and then you get charts, maps, workouts, etc).

My friend just ran the Boston marathon, I would like to see if I could do it next year - although I would be happy just to get near 3 hours - he broke the 3 hour mark and yet was sick at the same time - bastard that he is.

The Garmin thing sounds pretty cool. I use the Nike+ system and love it. And, contrary to what Nike wants you to believe, you do not need to use their Nike+ shoes, or even Nike shoes, for that matter. I use New Balance, and I've got a little pouch ($6) that holds the Nike+ sensor.

Oh, that is good to know! (I don't like most of the Nike shoes - I liked their Triax Stability back in the day, that was about it)
I had a Polar system a few years ago that was basically a foot mounted accelerometer (sp?) that did largely what the Nike one does, except it didn't talk to iPods or have an online network.

But for someone like me who is too lazy to do just about anything, the Garmin thing is pretty cool - especially since they have now shrunk it down so it no longer looks like you are out running with a freezer unit attached to your wrist.
